Craig Howell
I design, build, and ship software end to end, happiest turning ambiguous problems into products people actually use.
About
Most people pick a lane. I never could.
I care about the product decision and the data model and the user experience. I've found the best software tends to come from one person holding all three at once.
Good data is earned, not required. You don't get it by adding one more field, you get it by fixing the process: a workflow with a clear line of sight that earns its place in a user's day and gathers the data as it goes.
For the last several years I've built operating platforms, field tools, and the systems underneath them for a growing, real-world business, usually owning the whole arc, from “what should this even be” to shipped and running in production.
I'm not the specialist you call for one narrow thing. I'm the generalist you call when the thing doesn't have edges yet.
Four disciplines, held at once
Product
Deciding what to build, and why it matters.
Engineering
Full-stack, from the data model to the deploy.
Design
Interfaces with taste, restraint, and intent.
Leadership
Taking teams and ideas from zero to shipped.
Selected work
A few things I've built.
The thinking behind the work: the problem, the idea, and what it took, with the proprietary details left out.
MyCo, built from the roof down
The operating system I built to run a residential roofing business, end to end.
MyCo Install, the job in your pocket
The native app crews and PMs used to run the job from the roof.
A unified operating platform
One system of record for a field-heavy, multi-brand business.
Field estimation, reimagined
An in-home appointment that ends in a correct, signed proposal, built on the spot.
A commissions engine that pays people right
A fragile commission spreadsheet, rebuilt into an engine people can trust.
Live inventory, and the savings it proves
A warehouse system that fixed a broken spreadsheet and made bulk-buy savings real.
Capacity planning without the argument
A planning board that shows when a team goes over capacity, before anyone commits.
stwui, an open-source Svelte library
A Svelte and Tailwind component library I built and open-sourced, now past 450 stars.
Skills & tools
The toolkit behind the work.
The languages, frameworks, and systems I reach for most.
